EERC staffers participated in the 9th Annual Water Festival sponsored by the Dakota Science Center. Fourth graders from the Grand Cities area, Fisher (Minnesota), and Lakota and Hillsboro (North Dakota) were in attendance. The students learned about water quality, storm water, and flood control. Transparency tubes were used to demonstrate the effect that sediment has on water quality. An enviroscape model gave students perspective on what happens to runoff after a rain event and how the runoff can be detrimental to the receiving water body. A model of the Waffle® project was used to demonstrate the effectiveness of storing water on the land to prevent downstream flooding.
