IGCC and PFC Byproducts: Generation, Characteristics, and Management Practices

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) contracted with the EERC to facilitate appropriate regulations for clean coal technologies (CCT), specifically integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC) and pressurized fluidized-bed combustion (PFBC). The EERC reviewed documentation and data on IGCC and PFBC and their associated byproducts in order to meet DOE’s two primary objectives: 1) to familiarize the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) with the DOE CCT program, CCT byproducts, and the associated efforts by DOE contractors in the area of CCT byproduct management and 2) to provide information that will facilitate EPA’s effort by complementing similar reports from industry groups. The resulting report addressed the issues that EPA needed to review to make regulatory determinations on the status of fossil fuel combustion wastes.
