FlexCrete is a form of cellular concrete. But unlike traditional cellular concrete, FlexCrete is manufactured at lower temperatures and ambient pressure, using much higher volumes of fly ash. FlexCrete also allows the option of adding fiber materials for improved flexural strength.
Advantages of FlexCrete include: - Low Cost. Because of the low cost of raw materials and relatively low capital cost associated with placing a manufacturing facility into operation, FlexCrete homes and buildings can be built inexpensively. FlexCrete construction is up to 30 percent less expensive than traditional wood framing and up to 40 percent less expensive than conventional autoclaved aerated concrete.
- Ease of Use. FlexCrete is typically provided in rectangular blocks for walls and thin panels for floors and ceilings. These blocks and panels are entirely solid, making them easy to place and secure using less skilled labor. The materials can be sawed, drilled and shaped like wood using standard hand tools. Regular screws and nails also can be used in FlexCrete. Ordinary paint and plaster adheres to its surface. And because the solid blocks are filled with billions of microscopic air pockets, they are about one-fifth the weight of concrete.
- Physical Strength. Typical compressive strengths of FlexCreteTM are 200 pounds per square inch. Flexural strengths are even better with the addition of plastic or glass fibers.
- Durability. FlexCrete is fire resistant, capable of withstanding very high temperatures for prolonged periods. Because FlexCrete contains no organic material, it is not susceptible to pests. It is also non-allergenic and highly resistant to molds and fungi.
- Energy Efficiency. FlexCrete offers superior heat insulation properties. Acoustic insulation is also excellent.
- Environmental Sensitivity. Because FlexCrete is manufactured primarily with fly ash the environmental benefits are substantial. As a building material, FlexCreteTM replaces wood and reduces the depletion of forests. It also has a dramatic impact on the emission of greenhouse gases created during cement manufacturing, which fly ash use also partly replaces.
Note: This product is expected to be available commercially in fall 2004. |
