Biomass '07 Workshop Greening
With help from The Spitfire Agency the Biomass '07: Power, Fuels, and Chemicals Workshop went "green." This means that we made our best efforts to produce an environmentally sustainable event, as outlined below.
Biomass '07 Greening:
- Waste Reclamation - - Biomass '07 provided public Waste Reclamation Stations that offered a convenient place to recycle glass, bottles, plastic, aluminum, paper, and cardboard.
- Reusables - Biomass '07 was committed to serving convention meals on reusable china with washable utensils, so as to eliminate disposables.
- Compostables - In the event that we were unable to provide reusables at all meals, we purchased compostable items instead of using disposables. Plastic cold cups were replaced with bioplastic compostable cups made from corn. Paper cups were replaced with compostable cups. And plastic cutlery was replaced with compostable cutlery made from potatoes.
- Convention Center Greening - Biomass '07 worked with the Alerus Center to help them reduce the workshop's impact on the environment. On-site, we used 100% recycled hand towels, napkins, and other paper products. We also used bioplastic trash bags, organic hand soaps, and much more.
- Marketing & Printing - Whenever possible, Biomass '07 utilized advanced technology to reach our target market. We only used recycled paper.
- Merchandise - Whenever possible, our merchandise was created with environmentally responsible products, manufactured without the use of sweatshop labor.
- Food Distribution - Any unused food was distributed to local food banks.
- Sponsor & Vendor Education - Biomass '07 encouraged the sponsors, exhibitors, and vendors to join us in our sustainability efforts. We issued digital communication to outline the many ways that companies could reduce their own impact at our events. Additionally, we made The Spitfire Agency available to our clients for suggestions and assistance, as it pertained to executing an environmentally responsible sponsorship.
- Attendee Outreach - Biomass '07 actively promoted our sustainability efforts to the event attendees so that they, too, could join us in our efforts toward a low-impact event. Attendees received suggestions on ways in which they could make a positive impact.
