Workshop Information

Monday, October 23, 2006
Four presymposium workshops were offered on October 23, 2006, at the Marriott Denver Tech Center prior to the Symposium on Western Fuels. Each session lasted about 2 hours. Workshop fees were $150 per session or $500 for all four workshops. Without symposium registration, fees were $250 for each session or $850 for all four.

Time
8:00-10:00 a.m.Workshop 1: Mercury Control for Western Coals and Mercury-Selenium Issues
  • This workshop will provide an overview of the status of mercury control technologies for western U.S. subbituminous and lignite coals as well as information on the relationship between mercury and selenium.
10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.Workshop 2: Advancements in Predicting Ash Behavior in Western Coal-Fired Power Plants
  • Predicting ash behavior in coal-fired power systems is a challenge. New models to predict ash formation and fate in power plants have been developed and are being applied to predict ash and slag impacts on power plant performance.
1:30-3:30 p.m.Workshop 3: Fine Particulate Control for Western Fuels
  • This workshop will provide an overview of combustion theory and particle formation mechanisms that lead to the typical dust loading at the air heater exit of coal-fired boilers. Options will be presented for selecting fine particulate approaches based on known ash properties and target control requirements.
4:00-6:00 p.m.Workshop 4: Gasification/Carbon Sequestration
  • This workshop will provide an overview of gasification technologies in applications and development, along with an overview of CO2 sequestration, including capture, transport, geologic and terrestrial sequestration, and other relevant topics.
