Gerald Groenewold, Director, University of North Dakota Energy & Environmental Research Center (EERC) Since 1987, Gerald Groenewold has served as the Director of the EERC where he leads a multidisciplinary science and engineering research team focused on the development, demonstration, and commercialization of energy and environmental technologies, including major program initiatives in the areas of air toxics and fine particulate matter, the Plains CO2 Reduction (PCOR) Partnership Program, and the Center for Air Toxic Metals, one of ten Centers of Excellence at the EERC.

Keynote Presentations

The Honorable Kent Conrad, U.S. Senator (D-North Dakota) Senator Conrad is Chairman of the Senate Budget Committee and an expert on the budget process who has earned a national reputation as a deficit hawk for his efforts to impose discipline on the federal budget and safeguard Social Security and Medicare. A longtime member of the Agriculture Committee, he is known as an outspoken advocate for family farms and the rural communities that rely on U.S. agriculture. As a senior member of the Finance Committee, he is known for his special expertise on tax issues and his advocacy for rural health care through the Medicare program.

The Honorable C.H. “Bud” Albright, Jr., U.S. Under Secretary of Energy Bud Albright was nominated by President George W. Bush to serve as Under Secretary of Energy on June 21, 2007, and was unanimously confirmed by the Senate on August 3, 2007. Under Secretary Albright oversees the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE's) energy and environment programs, including its diverse portfolio of applied energy research and development activities, nuclear waste management efforts, and environmental cleanup of the nuclear weapons complex.


Luncheon Keynote Address

Carl Bauer, Director, DOE National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) As Director of NETL, Carl Bauer oversees the implementation of major science and technology development programs to resolve the environmental, supply, and reliability constraints of producing and using fossil resources. This involves technologies for advanced coal-fueled power generation and hydrogen production, carbon sequestration, environmental control for the existing fleet of coal-fired power plants, and improving the efficiency and environmental quality of domestic oil and natural gas exploration, production, and processing. Mr. Bauer has more than 30 years of experience in technical and business management in both the public and private sectors.


Banquet Remarks

The Honorable Earl Pomeroy, Representative in Congress (D-North Dakota) Congressman Pomeroy serves on the Ways and Means Committee and the House Agriculture Committee, the only member of Congress with an assignment on both. He also serves on the Ways and Means Subcommittee on Social Security and as Cochairman of the House Democratic Social Security Task Force. At the beginning of the 108th Congress, he was elected Cochairman of the bipartisan Rural Health Care Coalition, where he continues to serve.

The Honorable Byron L. Dorgan, U.S. Senator (D-North Dakota) Senator Dorgan is Chairman of the Democratic Policy Committee and an Assistant Democratic Floor Leader. In addition, he is Chairman of the Indian Affairs Committee, Chairman of the Energy & Water Appropriations Subcommittee within the Appropriations Committee, Chairman of the Energy Subcommittee within the Energy & Natural Resources Committee, and senior member of the Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee where he chairs the Interstate Commerce, Trade, and Tourism Subcommittee. Throughout his career, Senator Dorgan has fought to protect our most important priorities: Social Security, a family farm safety net, education, and affordable health care.
