Fueling the Hydrogen Economy is an online course developed by the EERC and the University of North Dakota (UND) Department of Continuing Education,
focused on teaching students about the emerging hydrogen industry. Discover firsthand how hydrogen
will be used as an alternative energy source and impact your overall quality of life.
Who should take the course?
This course is intended for anyone who wants to know about the future of hydrogen energy and its
potential role in satisfying our nation’s energy needs including:
- Middle-to-high school educators
- Professionals in the energy industry
- Graduate students
How do I participate online?
The course offers a unique blend of science disciplines. Students learn from and participate in
self-checks, video/audio and text-based lectures, quizzes, animation, and graphic elements. The
course will take you on virtual field trips, where you will gain access to teaching materials
including lesson plans, handouts, and computer animation.

How will I be graded?
Participates earn one graduate professional development credit from UND upon completion of the
course. You must complete a 25-point quiz at the end of the online lessons in order to receive
credit for the course.
Meet the Instructors

Michael J. Holmes
Michael J. Holmes is a Deputy Associate Director for Research at the EERC, where he
currently oversees fossil energy research, hydrogen production, and mercury control
technology projects. Mr. Holmes received his M.S. degree in Chemical Engineering from
UND and B.S. degrees in Chemistry and Mathematics from Mayville State University.

Chad A. Wocken
Chad A. Wocken is a Senior Research Manager in Environmental Technologies at
the EERC, where he currently works in a variety of program areas dealing with
gas-processing technologies, hydrogen production and purification, renewable
energy development, and environmental control. He holds a B.S. degree in
Chemical Engineering from UND.

Tera D. Buckley
Tera D. Buckley is a Marketing Research Specialist at the EERC, where she plans, designs, and implements market research, education, and technology transfer activities. She has worked in the areas of industrial waste management, hydrogen, biomass, and agriculture. She received her B.B.A. degree in Marketing from UND.
