Join us for Biomass ’11: Renewable Power Fuels, and Chemicals Conference,
July 26-27, 2011 at the Alerus Center in Grand Forks, ND!
|Governor John Hoeven Gives Keynote Address
The Energy & Environmental Research Center's (EERC's)
Biomass '10: Renewable Power, Fuels, and Chemicals Workshop, attracted over 300 registrants from 25 states, the District
of Columbia, and four Canadian provinces. Other countries represented include Brazil, Italy, and New Zealand.
This year's attendees represented 175 organizations, over 60% of them from private industry. This is the eighth biomass
workshop of its kind, focused on the production of renewable energy, fuels, and chemicals from biomass feedstocks.
"Biomass '10 is a tremendous event," said North Dakota Governor John Hoeven, who gave a keynote address at the event.
"To see so many people in attendance says a lot about what's going on right now at the EERC, which is doing great things,
not only for North Dakota, but the United States and the world," he said.
EERC Deputy Associate Director for Research and Workshop Technical Director Chris Zygarlicke believes the workshop
has the perfect stage here in Grand Forks.
"Renewable fuel utilization has been strongly tied to the use of petroleum fuels. In 2009, North Dakota became the fourth
largest petroleum-producing state. During that time, the EERC perfected a 100% renewable jet fuel made from northern Great
Plains biomass that won an award from Popular Science as one of the top 100 innovations of the year. Part of the workshop has
shown how bio-based liquid fuels can complement and coexist with their fossil-based counterparts," Zygarlicke said.
The 2-day workshop included comprehensive educational sessions on topics including trends and opportunities in utilizing
biomass; biomass feedstocks; biofuels; and using biomass for creating chemicals, heat, and power. The program included a
panel discussion on the use of algae as a feedstock. U.S. Senators Byron Dorgan and Kent Conrad also provided video comments.
EERC Director Gerald Groenewold said he believes this is the most balanced agenda for top-notch speakers and topics this event
has assembled since its inception 10 years ago. "Our organizing committee has put together a high-quality technical program,
which includes a broad spectrum of regional and national presenters from top industry organizations," said Groenewold. "I extend
my sincerest thank you to the event coordinators and sponsors. Their support and financial contributions have made this outstanding
"Sponsors of the Biomass '10 Workshop
included the U.S. Department of Energy through the EERC's Centers for Renewable Energy and Biomass Utilization; Signature Sponsor,
the North Dakota Department of Commerce Division of Community Services State Energy Program; Collaborating Sponsor, Biomass Magazine;
Partnering Sponsors, Barr Engineering Company and Cook Engineering, Fredrikson & Byron, Jamestown Stutsman County Economic Development
Corporation, Otter Tail Power Company, and Xcel Energy; and Contributing Sponsors, Fagen Inc. and the North Dakota Farmers Union.
Additional event donations were provided by Wells Fargo and the EERC Foundation.
The Biomass '11 Conference is scheduled for

|2010 Biomass Workshop Chairs and Presenters
“This was my first attendance at an EERC workshop, and all I can say is wow! Definitely a must-attend for those who want to
learn from an organization dealing with achieving a consistent, long-term RD&D strategy for transitions from conventional energy
to renewable energy.”
-Grant McVicar, Saskatchewan Research Council
“This conference has a great mix of topics affecting the vast diversity of feedstocks and processes to utilize biomass.
The conference is well organized and a friendly atmosphere with lots of opportunity to interact with others.”
-Douglas G. Tiffany, University of Minnesota
“The Biomass Workshop is an essential meeting on my annual renewable energy schedule. My interaction with one of the exhibitors
made the whole conference pay off already!”
-David Haberman, IF, LLC
Hard copies and CD-ROM versions of the final workshop proceedings are available for US$75 each.
